"Minds are like parachutes. They only function

when they are open" (J. Dewars)

Gerund or Infinitive?

- Verbs like forbid, intend, propose or start can be followed by gerund or infinitive and their meaning don't change

Ex. Steve started to play / playing golf four years ago

- On the other hand, other verbs change their meaning depending if they are followed by gerund or infinitive.
Some examples:
  • Forget + gerund: se emplea en frases negativas para indicar la imposibilidad de olvidar algo ocurrido en el pasado.
Ex. She will never forget meeting that actor.
  • Forget + infinitive: significa "olvidarse de hacer algo"
Ex. I forgot to buy the newspaper.

  • Remember + gerund: significa "recordar haber hecho algo en el pasado"
Ex. I remember giving you the car keys.
  •  Remember + infinitive: significa "acordarse de hacer algo"
Ex. Remember to bring a dessert.

  • Regret + gerund: significa "arrepentirse de haber hecho algo en el pasado"
Ex. He regrets seeing that film.
  • Regret + infinitive: significa "lamentar lo que se va a decir a continuación"
Ex. I regret to tell you that you can't climb Uluru.

  • Stop + gerund: significa "dejar de hacer algo / un hábito"
Ex. I stopped going to gym last year.
  • Stop + infinitive: significa "parar (una acción) para hacer otra cosa"
Ex. We stopped to have a coffee.
